With the exploding popularity of cannabidiol (CBD), claims touting it as the be-all and end-all of treatments for any and all health-related problems are easy to come across. These claims are, of course, false. However, there is a growing body of evidence suggesting CBD’s effectiveness in helping treat a variety of health conditions.
Here’s what you should know about CBD and the health conditions it can help improve.
On the heels of growing evidence from small-scale longitudinal research, anecdotal reports, and laboratory studies on the effectiveness of CBD to help treat epilepsy, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved an oral CBD product called Epidiolex to help treat severe epilepsy in 2018.
Epidiolex can now be used to treat two kinds of severe epileptic disorders called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome in patients two years of age and older. Both these disorders cause violent and near uncontrollable seizures that impact the patients’ health and quality of life.
According to research conducted in recent years, CBD has shown signs to reduce the symptoms of multiple anxiety disorders. These include generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder.
Through research on animal-models, National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has stated that CBD can reduce stress. When administered with CBD, the study subjects displayed lower behavioral signs of generalized anxiety. Their physiological symptoms such as a higher heart rate also showed signs of reducing.
Several recent studies have found that CBD helps with symptoms of PTSD, such as nightmares and recurrent distressing memories. CBD was tested as both a standalone treatment as well as a supplementary additive to other traditional treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy and conventional medication.
A case study conducted in 2016 involving a child patient who had suffered from childhood trauma and insomnia showed that regular administration of CBD helped reduce her anxiety levels and helped her go to sleep.
According to a study in the medical journal Current Neuropharmacology, CBD helps in lowering chronic inflammation and pain perception because of its effects on our vanilloid receptors.
Other studies have shown that cannabis potentially offers pain relief after chemotherapy treatments. Pre-clinical research has also provided evidence for CBD’s role in relieving painful symptoms brought on by MS, arthritis, and spinal cord injuries.
