3 Things We Know About CBD and What We Don’t

CBD is becoming increasingly popular as a supplement for its many potential health benefits. There is a growing body of evidence now that substantiates many health claims, however there is more work to be done.

Here are three things we know about CBD and what we don’t.

Legality and Regulation

The exact legal status of CBD in the US is in something of a flux. According to Harvard Medical School, all 50 states in the country have legislation that legalizes CBD, but they all have regulations that restrict it to varying degrees. The federal government has classified CBD at the same level as marijuana. However, in spite of that, it does not enforce regulations on CBD as it does for marijuana. Currently, there is a bipartisan consensus in Congress to legalize the hemp crop. Considering CBD is derived from hemp or marijuana, prohibiting it will be difficult to say the least.

In terms of availability, CBD is easily obtainable throughout most parts in the country. Most consumers tend to obtain it online.

Safety

The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that CBD has a good safety profile and is well tolerated. However, there are some side effects that may occur with CBD use. These include irritability, fatigue, and nausea.

Health Benefits

In 2018, the FDA approved the use of CBD as a treatment for severe epileptic disorders in children aged 2 years or older. The oral CBD solution Epidiolex is now used as a viable pediatric treatment option for Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Both these epileptic disorders cause violent and near uncontrollable seizures that considerably impact the quality of life for those who suffer from them.

What’s more is that the Epilepsy Foundation has stated that early evidence from laboratory studies, short longitudinal clinical studies, and anecdotal reports from patients suggest CBD has the potential to help control seizures.

A study published in scientific journal Neurotherapeutics has found evidence to suggest CBD as a treatment for a variety of anxiety disorders including generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

CBD is also used on many occasions as a treatment for chronic inflammation and painful symptoms. While studies have shown positive effects of CBD on mice and rats, there’s more research needed to substantiate its effects on humans.
